Rhythm is something you do, not just something you hear. That's the lesson dance keeps teaching me.
Dance trains the ear in ways I still rely on:
Counting in eights. Choreography lives in counts. That habit makes me pay attention to where a line lands in the bar, and where the pause sits.
Accents and hits. A good dancer hits the accent at just the right moment. A good rapper does the same with a word.
Space. Great dancers know that stillness matters as much as movement. I try to give my songs room to breathe.
Energy curves. A routine builds, peaks and releases, and a song can follow the same curve.
If you're stuck on a verse, stand up and move to the beat instead of staring at the page. The answer often shows up in the body first.
If you write, try it. Let your movement tell you where the words want to go.
